JOB SUMMARY
This job oversees the financial accounting and reporting activities for the Company in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles in the United States of America (GAAP) and/or Statutory Accounting Principles (SAP). Accountabilities include directing the accounting and reporting department which is responsible for the internal and external financial statement compilation process, maintenance of general ledgers, operational accounting, research and implementation of applicable GAAP and SAP technical guidance and communicating implications of guidance to senior management. Also includes responsibilities over certain treasury and shared services functions. The incumbent leads various direct and indirect reports primarily consisting of accounting and reporting managers, as well as lead and senior accountants and analysts.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Perform management responsibilities to include, but are not limited to: involved in hiring and termination decisions, coaching and development, rewards and recognition, performance management and staff productivity. Plan, organize, staff, direct and control the day-to-day operations of the department; develop and implement policies and programs as necessary; may have budgetary responsibility and authority.
Direct the monthly financial close processes and coordinating closely with the FP&A and actuarial departments. Also accountable for certain treasury, operational accounting, shared services, and tax areas.
Timely and accurate issuance of the audited financial statements, board and committee deliverables, debt covenants, as well as having responsibility for certain insurance department and related regulatory filings for the Company. Coordinate external audit process/activities with external auditors. External auditors include Commonwealth of Pennsylvania & other State Insurance Department auditors, various government program auditors, and the Company's external CPA auditors. Ensures that financial information is presentable for the auditors and be available for explanations and questions.
Effectively develop financial accounting policies and direct the financial accounting functions of the Company. Accountable for the general ledger of the Company. This includes but is not limited to review of the general ledger activity, active monitoring of the general ledger rolling reports as well as maintenance/deployment of the general ledger, consolidation tools, data repositories and reconciliation tools.
Responsible for the proper recording and maintenance of accounting records in accordance with GAAP and/or SAP. This includes but is not limited to active monitoring/review of the general ledger activity, analysis and investigation of fluctuations, trends and account balances, including significant financial statement line items such as premium revenue, net patient service revenue and claims.
Stay abreast of new accounting pronouncements that impact the Company and advise senior management of their impact to the organization. Direct the adoption of the new guidance, periodically in conjunction with the impacted finance or business areas. Communication of Accounting Updates and/or Financial Statement presentations to Audit Committees or Board of Directors charged with governance for assigned companies. Responsible for explaining accounting positions, new accounting guidance and their impact to the Company, required financial statement disclosures and financial results.
Establish and direct the procedures and controls required to ensure effective internal control and risk mitigation critical for the timely, accurate and efficient accounting and reporting of assigned processes.
Lead and manage critical corporate initiatives and projects that require a high degree of interaction with senior management.

Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or related field

EXPERIENCE

5 years of Big 4 Public Accounting or comparable experience with large regional CPA Firm, preferably in the insurance or healthcare industry
5 years in Accounting for insurance or provider entities
5 years in Financial accounting consolidation practices
5 years in Computerized accounting systems (e.g. Oracle, SAP, PeopleSoft) & consolidation packages (e.g. Hyperion)
