This position will work casually with flexible hours.
- Minimum 2 days on campus in Pittsburgh per month (flexible days)
- IACUC meeting attendance required the 3rd Thursday of each month
- Approximately 4 hrs remote per month for IACUC related activities (reviews and pre reviews)
- Every 6 mos approximately onsite 3 hrs and remote 2 hrs (semiannual reviews and inspections)
- On call consultation as needed during normal business hours (virtual or onsite depending on nature or urgency)
GENERAL OVERVIEW:
This position is responsible for performing duties related to the veterinary care of various laboratory animals; managing preventive medicine programs including rodent health monitoring, vendor surveillance, and quarantine programs, and assisting in leadership support to the animal care and use program. The Clinical Laboratory Animal Veterinarian provides clinical and administrative veterinary support to the animal care and use program with specific responsibility for regulatory requirements, veterinary oversight of animal care, provision for training needs in appropriate animal care and use, IACUC support, and the organizational point of contact for extra-mural animal related interactions (AAALAC, USDA, OLAW, public, etc.). The individual serving in this position works with the other team members to assure regulatory compliance for the use of animals in biomedical research. Conducts procedures and documents performance of effective veterinary preventive medicine program for animal colony.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Proactively provides veterinary medical and surgical support functions to AAALAC standards. Complies with applicable regulations and ensures that work performed in area of responsibility is conducted in a safe and compliant manner; Maintains proper records in accordance with SOPs and policies. (70%)
- Keeps abreast of relevant literature and high level knowledge of laboratory animal medicine and science. Mentors and supervises junior staff. (10%)
- Works collaboratively with research laboratories in model development, troubleshooting research projects and with research projects. (10%)
- Conducts audits of vendors of animals and animal related supplies/services.10%
- Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum
- Doctorate D.V.M or V.M.D. Degree from a college/school of veterinary medicine accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association
- 3 years in laboratory animal medicine or completion of training program in laboratory animal medicine
- License to practice Veterinary Medicine through the PA State Board of Veterinary Medicine
- Drug Enforcement Agency Practitioner Licensure within 60 days of hire.
