JOB SUMMARY
This job is responsible for managing the day-to-day financial accounting and reporting activities for the Company. Accountabilities include managing assigned aspects of the financial accounting & reporting department which is responsible for the internal and external financial statement compilation process, maintenance of general ledgers, research and implementation of applicable technical guidance, overseeing the monthly accounting close process and related activities. The incumbent leads various direct and indirect reports which, depending on assigned responsibilities, could consist of project managers and lead and senior accountants/analysts.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Perform management responsibilities to include, but are not limited to: involved in hiring and termination decisions, coaching and development, rewards and recognition, performance management and staff productivity. Plan, organize, staff, direct and control the day-to-day operations of the department; develop and implement policies and programs as necessary; may have budgetary responsibility and authority.
- Manage the timely and proper recording and maintenance of all financial transactions in accordance with GAAP, Statutory, or other regulatory requirements (as applicable) for assigned areas. This includes but is not limited to managing journal entries, calculations, analyses, allocations, account reconciliations, general ledger activity, analytical reviews and maintenance of related supporting accounting records. This also includes identifying non-routine transactions and determining their proper accounting treatment.
- Lead and oversee the timely preparation of all financial reporting activities for responsible areas. This may include internal reporting, external audited financial statements/footnotes, Board of Director report packages, regulatory financial reports, and any ad-hoc reporting or executive presentations.
- Coordinate assigned areas with FP&A, actuarial, treasury, operational accounting, shared services, tax, and other departments, as applicable.
- Ensure timely and accurate issuance of externally issued audited financial statements for the Company. Support external audit process/activities with external audit firm. External auditors include the Company’s external CPA auditors, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania & other State Insurance Department auditors, and various regulatory auditors. Ensure that financial information is presentable for the auditors and be available for explanations and questions.
- Support critical corporate initiatives and projects that require a high degree of interaction with senior management.
- Effectively oversee and maintain accounting policies, processes, and internal controls that are critical to the timely, accurate, and efficient accounting & reporting of assigned areas. Accountable for subject matter expertise for the general ledger system and other systems as applicable for assigned areas. This includes but is not limited to maintenance/deployment of the general ledger system, consolidation & reporting tools, account reconciliation systems, and other operational systems.
- Perform technical accounting research and interpretation support, as applicable. Stay abreast of new accounting pronouncements that impact the Company and advise management of their impact to the organization. Assist management with the adoption of the new guidance, periodically in conjunction with the impacted finance or business areas.

EDUCATION
Required
- Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or Finance

EXPERIENCE
Required
- 5 years in Accounting or Finance
- 5 years working with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), accounting practices and controls A broad-based technical background in Financial Concepts
- 3 years in a management or leadership role
Preferred
- 3 years working for Big 4 Public Accounting or comparable experience with large regional CPA Firm, preferably in the Insurance or Healthcare Industry
- 3 years of managing complex accounting closes and consolidations
- 1 year with Computerized Accounting Systems (e.g. Oracle, SAP, PeopleSoft) & consolidation packages (e.g. Hyperion)

- Strong technical abilities and must be able to interpret and clearly understand authoritative accounting guidance
- The incumbent must also possess an in-depth knowledge of insurance business in general, as well as the Organization, in order to analyze and apply guidance to specific situations

- Proven leadership skills – ability to motivate others to quickly achieve results in a matrixed environment
- Uses knowledge of industry and market trends to develop and champion long-term strategies

- Strong organizational and analytical skills in addition to project leadership and management skills
- Thorough knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles, accounting practices and controls, corporate tax regulations and a complete understanding of the financial accounting consolidation practices
- Broad understanding of business issues, metrics, organizational linkages and customer value
