GENERAL OVERVIEW:

This job works collaboratively with all members of the Network Infection Prevention Committee, AHN Allegheny Clinic and Highmark leadership to provide clean and safe environments across the enterprise and to help prevent the development and transmission of communicable diseases and infections for all populations served by the enterprise: employees, communities, patients, visitors, medical and clinical staff. The incumbent is responsible for designing and implementing network-wide infection prevention programs while ensuring compliance with the mandates of required accrediting and regulatory agencies. Promotes quality patient care through a program which includes investigation and problem solving in relation to the surveillance, prevention and control of infections. Acts as a resource when infections are identified across the network, analysis of those infections, and development of recommendations (including policies and procedures) that reduce all types of infection transmissions. Develops relationships with all departments within the network, acting as both consultant and educator regarding disinfection, sterilization, patient practices, policies and procedures designed to prevent infections.            

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform management responsibilities to include, but are not limited to: involved in hiring and termination decisions, coaching and development, rewards and recognition, performance management and staff productivity. Plan, organize, staff, direct and control the day-to-day operations of the department; develop and implement policies and programs as necessary; may have budgetary responsibility and authority. (20%)
  • Development and organization of the Network Infection Prevention Program including plans for development, implementation and review of network-wide data collection and policies. Implementation of the program by formulating, establishing and evaluating policies and procedures relating to patient care infection prevention measures throughout the network. Maintains network, hospital and department infection prevention policies and procedures. Compiles and shares data with network, AHN Allegheny Clinic and Highmark leadership and provides information and guidance on infection prevention issues on request such as emerging communicable diseases, post exposure management and isolation precautions. (15%)
  • Onboarding and mentorship of new members of the Network Infection Prevention Committee. Serving as facility based Infection Prevention coverage during vacancies and/or in times of need.  Working collaboratively with members of the Network Infection Prevention Committee in providing direction, problem solving, outbreak response, surveillance or other needs that may arise.  (15%)
  • Explore cutting edge opportunities related to evidence-based practices and incorporate relevant findings into network practices, policies and protocols. Design business cases and define barriers for acceptance and implementation of innovative Infection Prevention changes desired for the network. Identify strategies for sustainability.  (15%)
  • Point person for troubleshooting the infection prevention surveillance software, acting as a liaison between the Network Infection Prevention team and AHN Information Technology support teams. Collaborates with IT to resolve outstanding tickets and to modify or create new electronic reports to support or enhance Infection Prevention initiatives.  (10%)
  • Active membership in national and local industry organizations.  Pursue educational opportunities to stay abreast of changes in infection prevention standards, Joint Commission and DOH regulations. Provides on-going training opportunities and/or programs to AHN staff including Nursing, Medical Surgical Residents and Interns and other network employees to reduce the risk of healthcare associated infections. Participates in sharing critical Infection Prevention information including OSHA’s Bloodborne Pathogens Standard with new hires during AHN onboarding presentations10%
  • Implement processes and assures compliance with state and federal governmental and other regulatory agencies (e.g., OSHA) and accreditation (e.g., The Joint Commission). Participates in Infection Prevention focused regulatory mock surveys across the network to keep all facilities in a state of readiness. Works in partnership with Pennsylvania Department of Health and local county health departments for appropriate follow-up as needed.  (5%)
  • Involvement in enterprise activities through participation and collaboration with enterprise committees, task forces, process improvement and quality initiative projects. Demonstrates fiscal responsibility by supporting cost containment and opportunities for cost reduction once safety implications and clinical outcomes are considered.  (5%)
  • Other duties as assigned. (5%)


QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing, Medical Technology, Public Health, Epidemiology or related field
  • 7 years in a clinical role in a hospital or related setting OR   a disease surveillance role in a public health setting
  • RN License OR Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), Microbiology, or Microbiology Specialist ASCP certification
  • Infection Control and Epidemiology certification (obtained within in 1 year of hire)


Preferred

  • Master's Degree in Nursing, Medical Technology, Public Health, Epidemiology or related field
  • 7 years in an infection prevention experience
