SHAYNE: My name is Shayne, Associate Principal Consultant within the consulting arm of HMHS. And I’ve been with Highmark now for three years. Really, where we fit in is providing support to all of our clients, including our own internal clients, both from a consulting and a services standpoint and driving those solutions and forming our platform, continually improving it and driving it to what our clients need it to be.
Consulting’s a really fast pace, really energizing and fun, at time, job. So a lot of it is client interaction. Probably 90% of the role is client-facing, understanding what the client wants, where the industry is going, what’s in the market, and how can we really get them there.
So that really 90% of the soft skills meets the 10% of your technical skills and knowledge and that really drives our solutions for our customers. A lot of it’s on site, so a lot of travel, which can certainly take a toll, both professionally and personally. It’s really a balance of what we do for our jobs and how we keep ourselves personally landed or personally grounded that’s going to drive the success of the consultant and the success of the project.
My proudest achievement at Highmark, without a doubt, is serving in a role that saw our spending account product triple in size without adding significant cost to maintain and to operate the product while driving the team and creating the team that was responsible for that growth.
Being able to go out and communicate with our clients and talk to them and understand, again, what their business needs are and how we can help drive that solution is really rewarding at the end of the day for somebody in consulting. I think that consulting’s not only a great way to build your career from the inside, professionally, but also personally as well. We’re looked upon as a leader. There aren’t many health insurance technology consulting companies that are out there consulting and selling our platform as a product. We are the heartbeat of health care.
